History of the Aspen Chapel Gallery

The arts and specifically exhibitions of art were included in the original vision and dedication of the Aspen Chapel in 1969. The Aspen Chapel Gallery opened in 1985 and has had 265 consecutive exhibitions featuring the work of more than 1,500 valley artists, over 5,000 Roaring Fork Valley high school art students. The Aspen Chapel Gallery is totally secular, has no spiritual or religious aspect, and there is no discrimination of any artist.
How the Gallery operates:
The Aspen Chapel Gallery is a cooperative gallery. The artists pay a fee to be in shows and provide food for the opening receptions. Scholarships are available for artists. Volunteer curators make up the gallery committee and create the shows. They pick the theme, or art medium, the 10 or more participating artists, and the nonprofit partner. The co-directors organize all other aspects of the exhibition, coordinate the installation, and manage all financial matters.

The gallery is run by 2 co-directors, Tom Ward and Michael Bonds, along with the 5 curators.  Tom has been with the gallery since its inception in 1985.  Michael, who is a graphic designer and potter, has been co-director since 2017, replacing Carol Loewenstern who was a co-director for 16 years. The co-directors are paid and the curators donate
their time.

The Gallery committee meets regularly. The Gallery provides local artists a dedicated gallery space to exhibit their work.  Various exhibitions provide emerging and young artists the opportunity for their first public art exhibition.

How the gallery operates financially:
The Gallery is program of the Aspen Chapel, but it exists autonomously with its own checking account and separate budget.  The Gallery sets its budget and raises income from artist fees, sales of art, donations, sponsorships, and grants.  The Gallery pays all program expenses, labor, accounting costs.  The Gallery pays rent to the Chapel.  The Chapel supplies heat and electricity but no other expenses associated
with the Gallery.
Nonprofit partnerships:
Every exhibition partners with an Aspen or Roaring Fork Valley nonprofit organization to highlight the partnering organization, introduce an arts orientated audience to the nonprofit, and bring in a larger audience to the gallery. The partner attends the opening and has a place to display brochures or posters. The nonprofit organization receives 20% of sponsorships and 10% of the sales.  Since October, 2018, the Aspen Chapel Gallery has donated $91,242; $70,742 to 35
non-profits and $20,500 to the 5 Roaring Fork Valley High School Art Departments.

This show is in Partnership with Pathfinders

Pathfinders is a Colorado non-profit psychosocial support program for cancer and chronically-ill patients, those suffering from grief and loss, caregivers, family members and the community. Our programs foster personal growth and a safe place to feel and move towards healing by focusing on the social, emotional and spiritual issues accompanying a diagnosis or loss of a loved one.
